Today my attention was drawn to Lee Daniels’ forthcoming film The Butler, which details key events from the last century through the eyes of an African American – you guessed it – butler, at the White House. The trailer (see below) is cheesy as hell, but I will always look forward to work that draws on US political history. That The Butler is told from the perspective of a black man during a time of such civil unrest loads it with additional significance; it will be interesting to see how the text employs the imperial gaze.
Mainly though I was excited to hear that the screenplay was penned by Buffy alumni Danny Strong, whom recently won an Outstanding Writing for a Miniseries, Movie or a Dramatic Special Emmy Award for the made-for-TV film Game Change. It’s great to see Danny go from playing Sunnydale’s troubled lost soul Jonathan for 7 years, to gaining critical recognition for his writing.
